The latest videos in our #PROMICONexplained series on our YouTube Channel look at the top-down approach used by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya to develop and optimise natural photosynthetic microbiomes for producing valuable compounds like bioplastics, pigments, and sugars.
By creating specific lab conditions, the microbiomes were enriched with cyanobacteria. These microscopic powerhouses perform photosynthesis, using CO₂ and sunlight to grow. They produce high-value compounds, making them crucial contributors to the bioeconomy.
Harnessing the power of cyanobacteria and their ability to produce valuable substances not only helps reduce waste, but also opens the door to new, sustainable resources—paving the way for a greener planet.
