PROMICON partner Marina Rodríguez Carreiro (CIB) presented her latest results on PHACOS production through a systems biology approach aimed at obtaining genetically engineered bacteria. Her presentation was part of the 19th International Symposium on Biopolymers (ISBP), held from 20–23 October 2024 on Penang Island, Malaysia, under the theme “Towards Safe and Sustainable Biopolymers for our Future.” This biennial conference, which has travelled to locations worldwide since its debut in 1988, unites global experts to discuss critical advancements in biopolymer science and applications.
Topics at ISBP 2024 covered a range of biopolymer innovations, including sustainable production processes, environmental impact assessments, PHA waste management, and biodegradation pathways. Special focus was given to the centennial of PHA research, celebrating a century since Maurice Lemoigne’s pioneering work on this biopolymer in 1926.
The event highlighted the role of biopolymers in advancing eco-friendly solutions across industries, emphasising their potential to shape a sustainable future.
Additionally, two other PROMICON research partners (Auxiliadora Prieto and Maria Reis) delivered presentations at the symposium. Auxiliadora's plenary lecture looked at the Design and production of functional biohybrid materials based on bacterial polymers, whilst Maria’s keynote speech discussed Breaking the plastic wave: Innovating with biopolymer production.
PROMICON awareness-raising materials were also distributed to interested stakeholders.
