EBC-VIII, the 8th European Bioremediation Conference, was held on 12 - 17 June 2022 in Chania, Crete. The objective of the conference is to bring together scientists, engineers and other environmental professionals, amongst whom PROMICON, to present their findings and discuss future trends, directions and new challenges for the restoration of contaminated sites and marine environments as well as on resource preservation through recycling and bio-based reclamation.
The 2022 meeting was jointly organized by the Technical University of Crete and the University of Bologna and sponsored by the Environmental Biotechnology Section of EFB. Scientists and engineers met to discuss recent advances in the environmental remediation technologies sector, especially focusing on bioremediation and phytoremediation of contaminated sites and the marine environment.
The main conference topics included the technological advances of bioremediation treatment processes (including phytoremediation) for all types of media (air, soil, sediment, surface water, groundwater and industrial wastewater) contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated and other recalcitrant compounds. Another focus was the techniques for the microbiological, genetic and ecotoxicological monitoring of such processes. Innovative and low cost solutions through an integrated technological approach were also discussed, as well as resource preservation through recycling and bio-based reclamation of wasted resources.
Throughout the discussions, Dr. Joan Garcia from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) introduced PROMICON with a presentation titled "Collection, Selection And Upscaling Of Natural Cyanobacteria Microbiomes For Polyhydroxyalkanoates And Exopolysaccharides Production", describing the results of the UPC team in the framework of the project.
