Last month the Second Symposium for Young Chemists: Innovation and Sustainability (SYNC 2024) took place in Rome, between 24 and 28 June. The event brought together PhD students and early-stage researchers from various universities across Europe and beyond, fostering international collaboration and advancing the frontiers of chemistry. SYNC 2024 provided a platform for young chemists to engage in meaningful discussions, share their innovative research, and build lasting collaborations, all while enjoying the rich cultural backdrop of Rome.
Marta Catalão from NOVA ID represented PROMICON with a poster presentation titled “Selection and Characterization of Microbiomes Subject to Identical Environmental Stress Conditions for Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) Production”. PHAs – biocompatible and biodegradable polyesters synthesised by select microbial species – offer sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. Marta showcased the potential of different microbiomes to evolve into cultures capable of producing PHA and facilitated extensive discussions about biopolymers, successfully spreading the word about PROMICON.
