On 26 January 2022, Prof. Maria Reis from the NOVA ID Lisbon, Portugal, attended the leading IDEAS seminar, organised by Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit (UCIBIO). The seminar took place in an online environment, where the number of the participants was 20.

NOVA ID is a private non-profit research organisation dedicated to Research and Development and Innovation (R&D+I) activities, which is going to lead the Natural Consortia for Learning and Production team within PROMICON. The NOVA ID team will further cultivate existing microbiomes from natural or artificial environments in highly controlled and optimised bioreactors for production of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and phycobiliprotein pigments.

Maria presented on the Bottlenecks and Challenges in Biological Processes, where she touched upon topics as the valorization of CO2 using Biological Processes and the possible ways to improve the performance of biological processes using microbial consortiums.

While looking into the top-down and bottom-up approaches that can be used to enhance biological processes, while using microbial consortium, Maria explained that the PROMICON project will develop advanced characterisation tools to learn from nature which modules are needed for a successful microbiome.
