PROMICON’s fourth policy brief, Designing Microbial Communities for Enhanced Biohydrogen Production, is now featured in the project’s RIO Collection, and on the Horizon Results Platform.

The brief explores the potential of synthetic phototrophic microbial consortia to help sustainable energy production. By converting CO₂, N₂, water, and solar energy into biohydrogen and valuable biofuels, these communities offer a promising solution to today’s energy and environmental challenges.

Aligning with the EU’s Bioeconomy Strategy and Circular Economy Action Plan, the brief outlines how these systems support carbon capture, renewable energy goals, and circularity. It highlights the need for policy support in genetic engineering research, advanced bioreactor development, and long-term studies to ensure scalability and industrial viability.

Harnessing the power of light-driven microbial systems could significantly advance the EU’s climate objectives, offering higher energy-density biofuels compatible with existing infrastructure. This innovation underlines PROMICON’s mission to integrate natural solutions into strategic decision-making for a sustainable future.
