After four years of collaborative research, the PROMICON project held its final meeting at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, Germany, bringing together its consortium partners to present and review the results of four years of research into microbial consortia for sustainable bio-based production.
The meeting opened with a welcome from Jens Krömer, project coordinator, who provided an overview of the project’s progress and set the beginning of PROMICON’s 3rd Innovation Workshop, organised by Isle Utilities. The session highlighted several project achievements: a process for producing bioplastics, optical systems for monitoring biomass and PHB, and progress on functionalised PHACOS. The role of capillary biofilm reactors in enhancing light-driven bioprocesses also sparked discussion, followed by a round-table session with the Innovation Board.
Later, partners from PROMICON’s six work packages presented their final results. The results from all of the work packages are now available through PROMICON’s legacy booklet.
The second day also featured an open-to-all session featuring presentations from young scientists, who shared their PROMICON research. Presentations included David San León Granado’s work on metagenomics and systems biology, Juan López Gálvez on real-time bioreactor monitoring, Stamatina Roussou on acetate production in cyanobacteria, José Pinto on hybrid AI controllers, and Hannah Berreth on hydrogen-generating biofilms.
The meeting closed with remarks from Jens Krömer, who thanked all partners for their commitment and collaboration.
